Devin

Cognition's autonomous AI software engineer: plans, codes, debugs and ships complete tasks.

About Devin

Devin is Cognition’s autonomous AI software engineer — the first product to demonstrate an AI agent capable of completing real engineering tasks end-to-end, from understanding a problem statement through research, planning, coding, debugging, and delivering working software. Released in 2024 to significant industry attention, Devin represents a genuine shift in how AI can participate in software development.

In a Devin session, you assign a task the way you would assign to a junior engineer: describe the feature to build, the bug to fix, or the codebase to migrate. Devin opens a browser to research the problem, reads documentation, spins up a development environment, writes code, runs tests, reads error messages, iterates, and reports back with a working result and a summary of what it did and why.

What makes Devin different from AI coding assistants like Copilot is autonomy: it doesn’t wait for you to review each step. It handles the full loop — including installing packages, navigating unfamiliar codebases, writing multi-file changes, and recovering from failures — with a level of persistence and adaptability that goes beyond what standard LLM coding tools can manage.

Devin integrates with Slack, GitHub, and Jira, letting you assign tasks through existing team workflows. It can work in parallel on multiple tasks simultaneously, scaling capacity without hiring.

Devin is currently available via an enterprise pricing model rather than a public self-serve subscription, reflecting its positioning as a team-member-grade AI tool for engineering organizations.
